Decorative Lighting Project – Transforming the Reading Fuel Tanks into a Colorful Urban Landmark, Tel Aviv

This project involved the design and execution of a controlled DMX decorative
lighting system surrounding the historic Reading fuel tanks, including winning a
visualization competition and providing long-term maintenance for a decade.
The Tel Aviv Municipality, together with Atarim (the municipal development
company), set out to transform the historic fuel tanks of the Reading Power
Station-now a vibrant public and cultural hub - from a perceived environmental
eyesore into a striking aesthetic landmark on the city’s skyline.
The challenge was to create a unique, colorful, and precisely controlled lighting
solution that would highlight the structures in a decorative manner while
withstanding the demanding coastal environment.
Ami & Igal won the design-and-build tender, with our capabilities demonstrated
through a comprehensive lighting visualization that formed the basis for the
project’s approval.
We led the project through an integrated approach:
Optical and Decorative Design
Development of a dynamic, multi-colored lighting system controlled by
advanced DMX controllers, enabling Atarim to program changing color
schemes and lighting scenarios for seasons, holidays, and city-wide events.
Marine-Grade Installation Specification
The entire installation was executed in accordance with stringent marine
standards, including component selection, quality control, and preventive
maintenance planning-ensuring long-term durability in high humidity and
saline conditions.
Long-Term Commitment
As part of the tender award, we are responsible for the ongoing maintenance
of the system for a period of ten years, reflecting the client’s confidence in
the solution, the technology, and the reliability of our execution.
The Result
An illuminated legacy and a prominent urban landmark.
The Reading tanks have been transformed from an industrial symbol into a glowing
cultural and urban icon-enhancing the cityscape, activating the surrounding area,
and attracting a wide audience.
The project exemplifies our ability to combine advanced DMX lighting engineering,
marine-grade specifications, and a strong architectural-decorative vision into a
cohesive and enduring solution.
